MiCBT Institute reserves the right to cancel a scheduled workshop, course or retreat; please make hotel and travel arrangements with this in mind. In the unlikely event of a workshop, course or retreat cancellation, we will issue a full refund for workshop, course or retreat fees only. Children and unregistered guests are not permitted in the meeting rooms. The use of audio and video taping devices and mobile phones by participants is not permitted at any workshop, course or retreat.
To receive the early bird rate, all fees must be paid in full prior to the specified cutoff date. Registration forms submitted without payment will not be processed, and will not guarantee the early bird rate. To receive the regular rate, all workshop and course fees must be paid in full 14 days prior to the event date; retreat fees must be paid in full 45 days prior to the event date.
All cancellations must be submitted by email. Non-attendance at a workshop or course will not be grounds for full or partial refund/credit under any circumstances. Refunds will be available minus a $70 administration fee for cancellations made 14 days or more prior to the event. No refund or credit under any circumstances will be available for cancellations less than 14 days prior to the event. Given our effort to optimise the quality of training by limiting workshops and courses to a small size, exceptions to this can not be granted. If you are unable to attend, you are invited to send an alternate in your place at no extra cost. Please contact our office 14 days prior to the event, so we can provide the participant with an accurate name badge and materials and to minimize confusion at check in. Please notify us of the alternate's full name and contact information, including their email address.

All food provided by us is vegetarian. We do our best to accommodate dietary needs such as gluten, dairy and nut intolerances whenever possible. Please notify our office one month in advance of the workshop date. Our venues need adequate time to place orders with their distributors. Please note, although we do our best to accommodate dietary needs some venues do not provide adequate options and do not allow us to bring in our own food and beverages. Unfortunately, even requests placed one month in advance can not be guaranteed. You are welcome to bring in your own food and beverages to all of our workshop locations.

The origins and meaning of our sense of self have fascinated us for our entire human history. The perception of self has often been implicated in mental health conditions, as well as interpersonal and societal conflicts, from the smallest issue to the most devastating wars. Issues of poor “self-esteem” / low sense of self-worth, low self-confidence, self-loathing, self-doubt and the essence of the most common personality disorders, are all related to our relationship with a sense of self.
However, the main psychological theories of self and identity, including psychodynamic, behavioural, cognitive (episodic memory), and social have been of little utility in clinical practice because they generally remain philosophical and offer little in terms of practical tools to address daily problems. In contrast, Buddhist psychology proposes a conceptualisation of the self based on phenomenology, the data we derive from direct experience, which is then integrated in daily living to guide our steps toward “egolessness”, away from conflicts and dissatisfaction; away from suffering. Since MiCBT is based on such an integration, it is helpful for therapists using MiCBT to understand the nature and mechanisms of the self and apply this understanding in clinical practice. This can be of great assistance when addressing chronic conditions, because chronicity generally leads to identification with one’s continual or repeated experience of suffering, which in turn affects one’s schemas and sense of identity.
This masterclass will provide a useful conceptualisation of how the sense of self is maintained and updated over time through co-emergence dynamics between mind and body to maintain a sense of self-continuity. It will present supporting evidence from neuroscience. It will also discuss a more pragmatic way of understanding and addressing self-related issues that your clients experience.
